Trigger Point Massage

Trigger Point Massage Service in Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge & Coquitlam

What is a Trigger Point?

Trigger points are spots in a contracted muscle that hold tension, causing pain and dysfunction. This oftentimes results in decreased circulation, muscle contraction, spasm, and heightened nerve sensitivity within the muscle. If a trigger point is not addressed with a pressure point massage, you may experience ongoing sharp pains or a constant ache radiating from a specific muscle in the body.

How are trigger points formed? There can be many sources, however, some common ones include stress, overuse of a muscle, structural imbalance, trauma, dehydration, poor diet, or improper stretching before exercising. If you feel pain from a trigger point, it’s typically a sign that a muscle has been overused or injured and is unable to release adequate levels of oxygen in its contracted state due to reduced blood flow. Oftentimes referred to as a “knot,” the trigger point reacts to this diminished supply of oxygen by sending out signals of pain. While small, the pain can be severe and debilitating. A trigger point massage by a registered massage therapist can loosen these knots, break up the metabolic waste, and provide substantial pain relief.

What is Trigger Point Massage?

Trigger points will not heal on their own. They require a specialized pressure point massage to target the affected areas and loosen the tightened knots. How does trigger point massage therapy do this? Your registered massage therapist will release a trigger point by directing blood flow to the affected area while simultaneously flushing waste material away. This allows the tense muscle to reoxygenate and release tension. It also interrupts the pain-spasm cycle and encourages the muscle to stop contracting.

Trigger point massage uses a variety of techniques. Your registered massage therapist will focus on applying pressure directly to the trigger point through rubbing and pressing motions, using various levels of pressure.

Benefits of Trigger Point Massage

You may experience slight discomfort as well as simultaneous relief throughout the pressure point massage. These sensations are common as you feel the trigger points releasing, softening, and relaxing during treatment. Following your trigger point massage, you may have increased feelings of fatigue and soreness for a day or two. However, many people experience a boost in energy after trigger point massage treatment with increased mobility and relaxation.

The results of your trigger point massage will depend on your current state, lifestyle, and regularity of treatment. To get the full benefit of your treatment, we recommend strength training and stretching to keep your muscles limber, avoid sitting for extended periods of time, keep a nutritious, well-balanced diet, and have regular trigger point massages to help you maintain healthy muscle mobility.

FAQ

What are Trigger Point Therapy Techniques?

Trigger point massage (or pressure point massage) uses a variety of techniques depending on the patient’s needs and the registered massage therapist’s evaluation. Some therapists use specialized metal tools to increase the level of pressure applied, other use fine, pressure point needles, and many apply deep, controlled pressure through their hands, forearms, and elbows. The important aspect in any trigger point massage is that pressure is applied for enough time to allow the muscle to soften and release (typically between 30-120 seconds).

How Long Does Trigger Point Therapy Last?

The optimal length of treatment will depend on your needs, goals, and lifestyle. At Pre-Kinetic Wellness, we offer 30-, 45-, 60-, and 90-minute massage therapy appointments in Pitt Meadows. You can speak with your registered massage therapist about which length of appointment is best for you.
